A Musical New Year

You have to wonder why we look to Vienna for our New Year hit of classical music, but on listening to the Blue Danube again its hard to argue with this annual tradition. What a tune! So at Music55-7 we are following suit and look forward to the visit by the Ulster Orchestra on 08 January - I feel like waltzing already.
There is a lot to look forward to musically in 2009 with what can only be described as a bumper year for anniversaries - the Big 4 (as we can now call them) are Mendellsohn, Handel, Haydn and Purcell. So you can expect in-depth coverage from our friends at the BBC and many other festivals and events. We will of course be chipping in with featured works in our concerts, especially in the latter half of 2009.
One other anniversary that has sparked a great deal of interest at Music55-7 is the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth - ”What has the author of the Origin of Species got to do with music?” I hear you ask. Well the honest answer is that we don’t know yet, but instinctively we feel that music has something to say about the big questions raised by Darwin and that the link between science and music is strong. Its too early to say for sure but could be an interesting programming thread for our new season starting in Autumn 2009....get in touch if you feel you can contribute.
In the meantime we are looking forward to a musical New Year. If you are local to Derry or fancy a visit check out our programme - there is a diverse range of musical experiences waiting for you. Happy listening!

Season’s greetings…

Welcome to our new website, we hope you like it. New additions to the site and much more coming in 2009 so stay tuned!
